Quaden Bayles suing Miranda Devine

Quaden Bayles, the nine-year-old Murri boy who appeared in a video that went viral is suing News Corp and its high-profile columnist Miranda Devine for defamation.

In February, Quaden’s mother, Yarraka Bayles, posted a video saying: “This is what bullying does,” after her son, who was born with dwarfism, was bullied at school.

“I’ve just picked my son up from school, witnessed a bullying episode, rang the principal, and I want people to know, parents, educators, teachers, this is the effect that bullying has,” Yarraka says in the video.

In the confronting video, Quaden says: “Give me a knife, I want to kill myself.”

The footage went viral with most people showing sympathy for the child.

Others not he other hand, accused him of faking his distress after a fundraiser raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

After anonymous trolls chose to attack him online, the young boy was supported by high profile people such as Hugh Jackman and was invited to lead Australia’s Indigenous All Stars rugby league on to the pitch for a match in Queensland.

Devine retweeted the Twitter user @bubblebathgirl, who made claims that Quaden was an actor whose mother posted a fake sob story and collected $300,000 in donations.

Devine said: “That’s really rotten if this was a scam. Hurts genuine bullying victims.”

When the Twitter user @CoffeyJPC responded by saying: “It’s a crime if it is a scam. Child abuse. How could anyone parent do this?” Devine replied: “Yep. Exactly. On the case.”

Paul Barry, host of ABC's Media Watch, said Devine should have fact checked the post “as any proper journalist would do, she would know that it’s nonsense, and she should not be retweeting it and suggesting it might be true. Do you expect no standards from such a prominent columnist?”

But Devine did not delete her tweet and said: “Typical of your sloppy research @therealpbarry. I never mentioned anything about age. Dishonest diversion.”

The statement of claim says the tweet was defamatory because it carried the imputations that Quaden had “dishonestly acted out being distressed in a video to obtain money from donors” and that he had dishonestly pretended to be the victim of bullying, thereby hurting genuine victims of bullying”.

It also implied that his mother had “posted online a video of her son knowing it falsely depicted him as being distressed, to get donations” and that she had “dishonestly coached her son to pretend to be distressed to get donations”, according to the documents lodged in the federal court on Monday.

In March, News Corp lawyers refused to take responsibility for Devine’s Twitter account, saying it was “self-evidently a personal account and is published by Twitter”.

Why Quaden Bayles’ mum didn’t step in to stop the bullies

The mother of Quaden Bayles has broken down in tears as she explained the series of events that led to the heartbreaking meltdown that went viral last month.

Yarraka Bayles spoke to NITV about the video of Quaden saying he wanted to kill himself.

Nine-year-old Quaden who has dwarfism went viral after he was filmed crying after being bullied at school.

However, the footage has attracted criticism from trolls who say that the video was staged as a scheme to get money.

“Looking at that video it is very distressing, it's very triggering. Sometimes I think I'm trying to raise awareness, but sometimes I realise I'm actually doing more harm than good, so it's taught me a very valuable lesson as well,” she explained.

“But at that time at recording I just felt hopeless. I felt really and truly hopeless, like what is going to take? For me to lose my son before anything happens?

“I can't do that, I'm not going to wait,” she said choking back tears.

Yarraka also revealed the moments that led to the video being shared, as there were a new group of schoolgirls who were picking on Quaden.

“Apparently, there was a new student that wasn't aware of Quaden's condition and she had been making remarks, and Quaden had just had enough at the time,” she said.

“When me and my daughter witnessed that, the patting on the head and a couple of other little girls making reference to his height and laughing about it, he was very uncomfortable and I could see the look on his face.

“I know that look very well because it's a regular occurrence, especially when we're in public.”

Yarraka explained that before she put the video up on social media, she rang the school principal to let her know that her son was being bullied.

“I guess what people didn't see is what was said and done before I started recording,” she said.

“It was me comforting him and consoling him, and being the typical boy Quaden is, he thinks that I didn't do anything to stand up for him. So it was really difficult for me as a mum to watch that and not be able to do anything about it.

“People might think it's just a pat on the head, it's nothing, but if you actually speak to people in the short-stature community it can be quite dehumansing.”

Quaden also delivered a powerful message to his bullies, saying that they should be kind.

He also admitted he doesn’t like going to school because of them.

“Because they've never seen different people before,” he said.

“It's not nice when you say these rude things to other people.
False claims against Quaden Bayles’ age have caused the internet to revolt against the young nine-year-old, as supporters rush to his defence and provide “proof” of his real age.

The young Australian boy who lives with a condition called achondroplasia dwarfism, captivated the world after his mother shared a heartbreaking video showing the impact of bullying and how it pushed her precious boy to have suicidal thoughts.

Yarraka Bayles, who has been an outspoken advocate for indigenous issues and dwarfism, shared the video of her son Quaden to her Facebook on Wednesday, after picking him up from school “in hysterics”.

The clip went viral quickly as it depicted a distraught nine-year-old in tears, saying he wanted “to die” due to the bullying he receives at school.

People across the world, including celebrities like Hugh Jackman, rushed to his aid to offer immense support for Quaden.

A GoFundMe page to send Quaden to Disneyland has raised over $US466,512 ($A706,306).

It was stated any remaining funds after covering the cost of Quaden's flights, hotel, tickets and food would be donated to charity.

However, just hours after the video was uploaded and reached people across the world, a rumour depicting Quaden as a liar was set alight and caught on like wildfire.

The false claims seem to have originated from a post on Facebook which went on to circulate on Twitter and Instagram claiming the boy’s plight was a scam.

“Just so you know he scammed everybody … he’s 18, has plenty of money and yeah everyone fell for it,” the person wrote.

The “proof” provided by the Facebook user offered up included posts from his supposed 18th birthday.

People rushed to his defence, but the post could not be stopped even when Quaden’s mother took to Facebook to share a post by a woman who said she had “known Quaden since before this s**t blew up”.

“Ima (sic) say this once and that’s that. I’ve know about Quaden since before this s**t blew up. Yes, he’s 9! Dwarfism is not a joke, is he a model or actor?

“ … so are a lot of kids … That doesn’t mean s**t!”

Numerous social media users have also jumped to the boy’s defence, and shamed the people spreading rumour about Quaden, saying there is plenty of “proof” against it.

Interestingly enough, the viral footage of Quaden is not the first the world has seen of him. For many years, the nine-year-old has appeared on news programs and TV documentaries showcasing his family and the way they live.

A video from 2015 shows a four-year-old Quaden appearing with his mum on Studio 10 to raise awareness for dwarfism.

It is so weird and wrong to even need to prove this but for anyone who still believes the ridiculous conspiracy theory Quaden Bayles is an adult, here he is on @Studio10au in 2015, aged four. During the show he is once again described as a four-year-old boy.

Despite rumours showing him as an 18-year-old posing at his alleged birthday party, closer looks at the photographs shows it was snapped of him at a birthday party of a friend named Garlen.

A printed-out photo of Quaden posing with a group of older boys has the words, “Garlen’s 18th birthday” written underneath it.

Those who doubted the youngster also took a hit at his online presence and the fact he had a talent profile made for him that lists him as an actor, extra, model and influencer.

Though some have said his past experiences in these fields prove he is older than he says, his profile appears to prove the exact opposite.

In his biography on the website, it states he is eight years old, though it is unclear when this was last updated.

Another form of “proof” people gave to paint Quaden as a person lying about his age is a photograph showing Ms Bayles and her son each holding a glass of what looks to be wine, but turns out is Appletiser– a sparkling apple juice.

If you need Lifeline support, phone the 24/7 service on 13 11 14.

Footy stars’ incredible response to tragic video of bully victim

The relentless bullying of a nine-year-old Indigenous boy has prompted some of NRL’s biggest stars to show their support.

Quaden Bayles’ mother, Yarraka, took to social media to share a video of her son visibly distraught after suffering from ongoing bullying – something she said happens “every single freakin’ day”.

In the video, Quaden admits that he wants to take his own life, with Yarraka revealing to NITV that he has made attempts in the past.

The article identities Quaden as a Murri boy and said he was born with Achondroplasia, which is the most common form of dwarfism. Speaking to NITV, his mother said that on the day in question she saw him being teased for his height.

“There’s no escaping it, this is our reality,” said Yarraka in the video.

“I used to tell him just ignore it; well no, f***ing ignoring it doesn’t solve the problem. How does that address bullying if you choose to ignore it?

“It needs to be addressed straight away and that’s exactly what I’m doing now. Every time it happens, I’ll be doing a live video so that people know. So hopefully we can make some changes so that this doesn’t happen to another family and hopefully we don’t lost another young innocent life to bullying.”

She released a statement, saying “bullying has to stop” and thanking people from “all around the world” for their support after the video garnered 4 million views on Facebook only a short while after posting.

“Due to the large volume of messages, we are unable to respond to everyone at this time as we need time to process as a family and would like to ask that media respect the family’s wishes, they are not taking calls and will be speaking to First Nations Media only at this time,” a statement read.

“Again, thank you everyone, Quaden’s feeling the love and now he needs a good rest.

“We are meeting with the appropriate people in power to make changes and make a stand against bullying.”

With the NRL All Stars game between an Indigenous and a Maori side to be played on Saturday night, the Indigenous All Stars reached out, asking the Brisbane boy to lead them only to the field on the Gold Coast.

The team posted a video to Twitter, with South Sydney Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell, who met Quaden back in 2016 at the Koori Knockout rugby league carnival, doing the talking.

The Indigenous #NRLAllStars are behind you Quaden! 👊🏽❤️ pic.twitter.com/52RLy8SrSd
— NRL (@NRL) February 20, 2020

“Hey Quadey, how you going, cuz?” he addressed the boy who he said is a “little super hero” after their meeting in 2016.

“Just want to wish you all the best, brother. We know you’re going through a hard time right now but the boys are here, we got your back, we’re here to support you, bud. And we just want to make sure that you’re doing alright.

“Your mum’s on your side, we’re on your side and [we want to] make sure you’re thinking the right things, bud, because we want you around.

“We want you to lead us out on the weekend. It’s gonna mean more to us that it will to you, bud. So just make sure you’re looking after yourself and hopefully we get to see you in the next couple of days.”
